Antioxidants

If you are into skin or overall body health, most likely you have heard of antioxidants. So, what are they and what they do?

Antioxidants protect skin from the assault of free radicals (UV from sun, pollution, cigarette smoke) that can cause oxidative stress. Antioxidants are able to neutralize the effects of free radicals or possibly delay some cell damage. This neutralization may cause a reduction of abnormal skin pigmentation and fine lines. Your body’s cells naturally create some powerful antioxidants. They are also found in commonly consumed foods, like whole grain bread, certain cereals, beans, blueberries, red grapes, red cabbage and kale, to name a few.

It is equally important to use skincare products (creams, lotions, and cleanser) with ingredients that contain antioxidant properties such as vitamin E, jojoba oil or green tea to combat elements that damage skin, but also can help to calm and give a more youthful appearance to skin.

Probiotics

Probiotics can be found in fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir or sauerkraut. These healthy bacteria help our body to restore balance to function well by fighting off bad bacteria. Probiotics are also beneficial for our skin when applied topically. As we age, our skin’s PH increases leading to dryer skin and fine cracks. Probiotics have calming effects and may help to improve skin by bringing it back to a normal state, and slow down the visible signs of aging. Some studies suggest that probiotics are beneficial for more serious skin disorders, such as inflammation, rosacea or eczema

Helpful Tip

Look for an expiration date on any products that are being advertised as probiotic creams or lotions. Since probiotics are live bacteria, they can only be effective for approximately six months after opening.  These types of products are traditionally packed in an airless containers.

And, remember, always choose products with ingredients that fit for your skin type – dry, oily, or combination. You’ll get the best results!

Vitamin C is a powerhouse ingredient for skin care products. It is a potent, water-soluble antioxidant that protects your skin, making it brighter and smoother. Antioxidants are important because they allow skin to repair itself and get rid of free radicals in the skin. Free radicals are the molecules in the environment that cause damage to our skin which is a leading cause for premature signs of aging. (See blog: https://www.clavebodycare.com/your-environment-and-your-skin).

Vitamin C also stimulates collagen production, a naturally occurring protein found in our body which is partially responsible for skin strength and elasticity. As we age our body makes less and less collagen. Using vitamin C can improves skin elasticity and slow down signs of skin aging.

What level of Vitamin C is beneficial for your skin?

Skin care manufacturers use different levels of vitamin C concentration in their products. It all depends on your type of skin. For example, if you have dry and sensitive skin, you’ll probably want to go with a lower level of concentration. The level of concentration varies from low level (5% to 10% for dry skin) to high level of concentration (20% to 25% for oily skin).

In order to get an idea regarding the concentration of ingredients, it is important to read the list of ingredients on the package. Ingredients closer to the top of the list have higher levels of concentration.

General rule of thumb: Vitamin C is least stable. It is prone to oxidation when exposed to heat or light. Although it is difficult to stop the process, you can take a few steps to delay the process. Keep products in a cool, dry place that is out of direct sun, such as cabinet or drawer. Close container tightly after use.
